Picasso's Woman: A Breast Cancer Story
Published in Hardcover by Kodansha International (May, 1996)
Authors: Rosalind MacPhee and Kathy LaTour
Average review score:

A Story of Courage and Truth
Roz MacPhee is a true heroine in every sense. I had some contact with Roz, as she did the majority of her writing in my friend's cabin, just north of Vancouver, Canada. Everything I know of her is reconfirmed in Picasso's Woman. She was a woman of spunk, intelligence, warmth, and unfailing humour. Her story is one that is all too common, but she captures it with such a keen sense of reality and humour, that it can't help but be inspirational to families who are effected by this disease. I applaud her for having the courage and generosity to help others try to understand the emotions and fears that women with breast cancer experience.

Gem of a book!
As a first generation Portuguese-Canadian, I thoroughly enjoyed this book, and would highly recommend it to anyone with an interest in Portuguese history, or the history of immigrant groups. One need not have a background in the subject matter as the work is written in a very accessible and readable manner.

Its essays are varied, and gives one a thorough introduction and understanding of the challenges and issues faced by the Portuguese upon their arrival in Canada. One interesting point of note is that it includes a section on the immigrant group in both Montreal and Toronto and how the groups have adapted to 2 very distinct communitities.

Although a relatively "new" immigrant group to Canada, the Portuguese have now an excellent piece of work commemorating and chronicling their place in Canada's social context. Kudos to the editors: Victor da Rosa and Carlos Texeira!

Pragmatic Idealism: Canadian Foreign Policy, 1945-1995
Published in Hardcover by McGill-Queens University Press (June, 1998)
Author: Costas Melakopides
Average review score:

Pragmatic Idealism, Canadian Foreign Policy, 1945-1995
The book provides an overview of the Canadian role in international affairs in the post-war era. After reading the book I realised that Pragmatic Idealism dispels some of the myths surrounding Canadian foreign policy and underlines the distinctiveness of Canada's place in world politics. Drawing upon philosophy and political science theory, Professor Melakopides develops a new perspective of international politics that contrasts with the realist mainstream. He proves that there is an remarkable continuity underlying Canadian foreign policy in the post war era. Professor Melakopides defines Canadian internationalism as "pragmatic idealism," a balanced synthesis of idealism and pragmatism, and demonstrates concretely how it reflects the principles, interests, and values of Canada's mainstream political culture. Based on Canada's record in the areas of peacekeeping and peacemaking, arms control and disarmament, foreign development assistance, and human rights, Professor Melakopides reveals that at the heart of Canadian foreign policy we can find the concepts and the practice of moderation, communication, mediation, co-operation, caring, and sharing. I think this book holds the key to understanding the principles and trends that have defined the Canadian role in international relations over the last four decades. I find that the book is a must read for the international relations students and its format and concepts are very useful for the students and the instructors who work in the area of International Relations.

Prior to Meaning: The Protosemantic and Poetics (Avant-Grade and Modernism Studies)
Published in Paperback by Northwestern University Press (October, 2001)
Authors: Steve McCaffery, Marjorie Perloff, and Rainer Rumold
Average review score:

A postsemantic review
Who, concerned about contemporary poetries, could not be fascinated by these essays? Who, concerned about how much there is to read in the world, could not find these essays utterly exasperating, even self-parodic, in their smug insularity and leaden, deadened prose of the most pedantic jargon imaginable? I gave it 5 stars as a protest against the very idea of such imbecilic rating systems, but I hardly recommend it wholeheartedly.

Proceedings of the 5th Canadian Conference on General Relativity and Relativistic Astrophysics: University of Waterloo 13-15 May, 1993

There and back again in 2 + 1 dimensions....
This book is a powerful summary of where relativity and gravitational theory were at the end of 1994. From Don Page's succint look at black holes and information to John Moffat's collaborator D.C. Tatarski's defence of the consistency of NGT these works make for a wide and rich variety and consideration of Gen. Rel. and Gravity. Not for the faint-hearted or those looking for the most up-to-the minute results, the book never-the-less represents a breadth of scholarship and - especially in conjuction with the full set of reference's given for each article (Dr. Page's has 291 references alone) - an excellent place to jump in and begin deeper study of this fascinating field. Sorry, I'm not giving up my copy :-) (Note: This is NOT a book for the layman unless they have mastered advanced math and physics concepts already :-) )

Proud Past, Bright Future: One Hundred Years of Canadian Women's Hockey
Published in Hardcover by Stoddart Pub (February, 1995)
Author: Brian McFarlane
Average review score:

Fantastic book
I read this book about 4 years ago and found it in my college library which really surprised me since I live in Nevada and this isn't exactly a hockey hotbed. I thought it was great and since I'm both a hockey nut and a history nerd, this was great to read. The only minor issue I have with it was towards the end when it turned into Team Canada kicks [tail]! Since I was reading this after the USA women won the very first women's Olympic hockey gold, this was a bit of an issue. I thought it was great to learn about how women have been playing the game as long as the men and that Lord Stanely's daughters even tried their hands at it. Would highly recommend this to anyone interested in hockey, sports history, and women's sports. Love the pictures too!

excellent and creative collection of works
This book is an excellent read for poetry and autobiographical works about sexuality, disability, and the interactions between the two. Really a must read for people investigating experiences about womanhood, ability, queer sexuality, family, women of color, classism, and much more. Very reflective and intense but well-written and enjoyable.
